A FRESH LOOK AT SAVING HORSES

Bowie, Md. – April 2011/www.BelievingInHorses.com/ -- A new book for the young and young at heart. With a modern slant including technology such as the internet, cell phones, and photographs, Believing In Horses delivers a powerful message in terms that appeal to today’s youth.

Believing In Horses is not just another horse book. Maryland author Valerie Ormond’s debut novel details the very real issue of the unwanted horse problem in the United States, and one girl’s commitment to saving a group of horses. Although a work of fiction, many of the issues addressed are true to life. According to the 2010 American Horse Publications survey, the issue of unwanted horses ranked number one in the area of concerns among horse people.

The book is a slice of Maryland life and features local stables and horse rescue and re-training organizations. A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the non-profit organizations Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, in Calvert County, Md., and Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue, Inc., in Prince George’s County, Md. Both organizations supported the author’s research for the book and are active “horse savers.”

The book’s main character is a smart, caring, and non-self absorbed pre-teen. The story highlights volunteerism, teamwork, and issues military families face regarding moves, separations, and fear.

“I didn’t realize until after I had written the book that there aren’t many books out there focusing on military families. With so many of our service members deployed, families, and friends of these families, face the pressures of those situations every day all over the country,” said Ormond, a retired Naval officer.

Jonathan Boudin, owner of J.B. Max Publishing, stated: “This is a story that has to be known,” when he made the offer to publish the book. “The depths of the descriptions throughout the book are such that I felt like I was actually there with Sadie in her adventures. The story is very inspiring, particularly to kids who want to make a difference and have their voices heard. This is a story that teaches not only about horses, but also about lobbying, campaigning, and having a voice.” While the targeted readership is young adult, kids of all ages have enjoyed the plot, suspense, and characters.

Ormond also teamed with her brother, a former teacher and current Educational Consultant, to develop comprehensive Discussion Guides and Activities, available free of charge on the Believing In Horses web site.
“This comprehensive discussion and activity guide will be welcomed by teachers, parents, and other educators to engage students in discovering the multiple levels of meaning in Believing in Horses,” according to Carol B. Thornton, school librarian for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Believing In Horses is available now at Amazon.com and via the book and author’s web site. For more information, or to order the book, please visit www.BelievingInHorses.com.
